Block a Vercel promotion when the error budget is burning
When a Vercel deployment requests promotion to production, this flow checks the live Honeycomb burn rate and either approves the promotion or cancels it and pings the deployer.
How it runs
The automated pipeline, trigger to output.
- TriggerVercel promotion-requested webhookVercel
- ActionQuery Honeycomb SLO burn rateHoneycomb
- LogicCompare burn rate to block threshold
- ActionCancel Vercel promotion if over thresholdVercel
- OutputDM the deployer the gate decision in SlackSlack
What it does
Gates production promotions on the current error-budget burn rate. When a Vercel deployment is ready to promote, the flow reads the relevant Honeycomb SLO; if the budget is burning faster than the allowed rate, it cancels the promotion and notifies the engineer who triggered it. Otherwise it lets the promotion proceed.
When to use it
Use it when production promotions are a distinct, gated step and you want a hard interlock against shipping while an SLO is on fire. Best for teams using Vercel preview-to-production promotion and a Honeycomb SLO per service.
How it works
- 1Vercel sends a deployment-ready / promotion-requested webhook.
- 2The flow queries the matching Honeycomb SLO for current burn rate.
- 3A logic step compares burn rate to the block threshold.
- 4If over threshold, Vercel cancels the promotion; if under, it is allowed to continue.
- 5A Slack DM tells the deployer the decision, with the burn rate and a Honeycomb link.
Set it up
What you configure once, before turning it on.
- 1Connect VercelDeploys, runtime logs, analytics.
- 2Connect HoneycombDistributed traces and queries.
- 3Connect SlackChannels, DMs, threads, mentions.
- 4Set each agent's modelWe leave models unset so you pick the tier — fast + cheap, or top-quality.
- 5Tune it to your dataEdit the prompts, filters, and field mappings so it matches how your team works.
- 6Test, then turn it onRun once against a sample, confirm the output, then enable the trigger.
