Monday WIP guardrail: real-time alert when a column tips over its limit
The moment an item moves into a column that is already at its WIP cap, this workflow DMs the person who moved it and posts to the team channel, naming the column, the new count.
How it runs
The automated pipeline, trigger to output.
- TriggerMonday status-column change webhook firesmonday.com
- ActionRe-count items in the destination columnmonday.com
- LogicCompare new count to column WIP limit
- LogicIdentify the mover and oldest parked item
- OutputDM the mover and alert team channel in SlackSlack
What it does
Instead of waiting for standup, this catches WIP breaches at the instant they happen. When a Monday item changes status into a tracked column, the workflow checks whether that column is now over its limit and, if so, fires an immediate Slack alert to both the mover and the team channel.
When to use it
Use it on boards where overload needs to be stopped in the act, not reviewed after the fact. It nudges people to finish or unblock existing work before pulling new cards, enforcing the WIP discipline in the moment.
How it works
- 1A Monday webhook triggers on any status-column change for the board.
- 2The workflow re-counts how many items now sit in the destination column.
- 3Logic compares the new count to that column's WIP limit; if at or under, it stops.
- 4If over, it identifies the user who made the move and the oldest item already parked in that column.
- 5It DMs the mover with the breach and posts a short heads-up to the team channel naming the column, the count vs. limit, and the suggested item to clear first.
