Ask-the-Runbook Slack Assistant
Lets engineers ask plain-English operational questions in Slack and answers with step-by-step runbook guidance pulled and cited from your postmortem and runbook corpus.
How it runs
The automated pipeline, trigger to output.
- TriggerEngineer asks bot a question in SlackSlack
- ActionRetrieve relevant runbook and postmortem passagesConfluence
- LogicCheck relevance before answering
- ActionCompose grounded step-by-step answerOpenAI
- OutputReply in Slack thread with citationsSlack
What it does
Engineers mention the bot in Slack with a question like 'how do we drain a stuck Kafka consumer group?' and get back a grounded, step-by-step answer assembled from your actual runbooks and postmortems, with source links so they can verify before acting.
When to use it
Use it as a 24/7 first responder for operational questions that currently get answered by whoever happens to be online. Best when your runbook knowledge is real but scattered across many Confluence pages.
How it works
- 1A Slack mention or slash command triggers the workflow with the engineer's question.
- 2The question is embedded and used to retrieve the top runbook and postmortem passages from Confluence.
- 3A logic step checks whether any passage is relevant enough to answer from.
- 4OpenAI composes a numbered, runbook-style answer strictly from retrieved context, refusing to guess when context is thin.
- 5The answer is posted back in-thread with cited source links and a 'was this helpful' prompt.
Set it up
What you configure once, before turning it on.
- 1Connect SlackChannels, DMs, threads, mentions.
- 2Connect ConfluenceSpaces, pages, blueprints.
- 3Connect OpenAIModels, embeddings, files.
- 4Set each agent's modelWe leave models unset so you pick the tier — fast + cheap, or top-quality.
- 5Tune it to your dataEdit the prompts, filters, and field mappings so it matches how your team works.
- 6Test, then turn it onRun once against a sample, confirm the output, then enable the trigger.
