Catch first-time merchant charges that skip normal vendors
Detects when a department's card hits a merchant it has never used before, checks the charge against the department's envelope headroom in Snowflake.
How it runs

- ActionCheck merchant history + envelope headroom in SnowflakeSnowflake

- OutputPost new-vendor charge to Teams review channelMicrosoft Teams
What it does
Most off-pattern spend is not a huge number, it is a charge at a merchant the department has never used. This workflow flags first-time-merchant charges, the classic signal for a misrouted card, a rogue subscription, or a fraud probe, and brings them to a human with the context needed to clear or escalate.
When to use it
Use it when your anomaly rules based on amount alone miss the small-but-novel charges. It is ideal for teams with a stable approved-vendor list per department who want eyes on anything outside it.
How it works
- 1A Stripe webhook fires on each new card charge.
- 2The workflow queries Snowflake to check whether this department has ever charged this merchant before and how much envelope headroom remains this month.
- 3A logic step passes through only first-time merchants for that department.
- 4An enrichment step does a quick web lookup on the merchant name to add category and legitimacy context.
- 5The charge posts to a Microsoft Teams review channel with the merchant context, department, and remaining envelope so a reviewer can approve or escalate.
